Research, Concept & Design

I spent several few weeks in pre-production on Mc G's Netflix film, 'Uglies'.

Scott Westerfeld's iconic story paints a dystopian future obsessed with personal image and the transition from 'Uglies' to 'Pretties'. I explored a holographic route to all the UI which would have allowed Tally to explore her chosen looks and options in 3D.

We also looked at how this might translate to surgery and other UI aspects, and the idea of wearable UI that tracked to the features of the casts faces showed real promise.

Surgical UI

We explored the idea that UI could be projected on to the contours of Tally's face to show where and how the automated surgery procedures might take place.

I loved this treatment and ended up exploring how it might work across our UI treatments throughout the film.
